The Women is a historical fiction book by Kristin Hannah published in February this year. This is the story of a young nurse, McGrath, who served as a nurse in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. She naturally did not want to join the army but the death of her elder brother turns her up. Though she was born and grew up in privilege, her future wasn’t the same. Basically, “The Women” book is very inspirational for girls and encourages – Women can be heroes.
In doing so, she leaves her sheltered and comfortable life in California to serve in a war-ravaged country working under dangerous conditions. When she returns, the atmosphere in America is hostile to veterans, and dismissive of women’s contributions in the war and she struggles to assimilate again.
An often-overlooked account of the brave women who served in Vietnam is presented in The Women, a tale of fellowship, refusal, patriotism, and remembering. This book beautifully demonstrates the experiences of all women who put themselves in danger and whose sacrifice and dedication to their country are all too often overlooked.
It is the singular narrative of one woman who went to war. The Women is a beautifully drawn tale about strong friendships and audacious patriotism. It features a distinctive protagonist whose idealism and bravery in the face of adversity will come to define a period.
